The risk

Lithium batteries are efficient—and unforgiving.

A technical defect or a handling error during storage or charging can trigger thermal runaway: an uncontrolled release of the stored energy, with fire, projectiles and toxic gases. These are the five causes behind most incidents.

01

Overheating while charging

02

Wrong charger or overcharging

03

Deep discharge

04

Mechanical damage

05

High ambient temperature

“From the property insurer's view, lithium batteries must potentially be classified as a hazard.”
— Carsten Tormöhlen, Allianz Deutschland AG

Guidance such as VdS 3103 therefore calls for structural or spatial separation—at least 2.5 m from combustible materials where no automatic extinguishing is present—immediate isolation of damaged batteries, and protection against short circuits and heat. Certified containment turns those rules into one simple, inspectable measure.

Where to start

Penetrations into the battery room

Cable and pipe routes into a battery room cross the same compartment boundary. Firebreak Service Transits seal those penetrations and stay re-enterable when the cabling changes.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Why do lithium batteries need fire-rated storage?
A technical defect or improper handling during storage, charging or operation can trigger thermal runaway—an uncontrolled release of the stored energy with fire, projectiles and toxic gases. Insurers increasingly classify lithium batteries as a hazard; VdS 3103 guidance calls for separation from combustible materials, protection against short circuit and heat, and immediate isolation of damaged batteries. Certified containment answers all of it in one inspectable measure.
Storage cabinet or charging cabinet—which do I need?
If batteries are only kept, a PRIOCAB-Li EI90 storage cabinet suffices. The moment you charge inside the cabinet you need the PRIOLION line: technical ventilation, socket strips, smoke detection, automatic closure of supply and exhaust air in case of fire, complete power shutdown, and optional fire suppression.
What makes the PRIOLION Premium different?
It is tested against the scenario everyone actually fears: batteries igniting inside the cabinet. Testing per VDMA 24994 proves the cabinet contains flames, projectiles and splinters, with an external temperature rise of no more than 150 K—in addition to 90-minute fire resistance from outside to inside.
What do I do with a damaged or defective battery?
Remove it from the storage or production area immediately and isolate it. PRIOPACK containers with absorbing filler packs enclose the battery completely; PRIOPACK-T adds transport-grade locking so the container stays closed on the road. For a battery already in thermal runaway on a pallet, the PRIOCOVER enclosure can be placed over the top by forklift.
Can Pyralta also install and commission?
Yes. Cabinets arrive ready to plug in; rooms are installed and commissioned on site with ventilation, detection and racking. We deliver the documentation your fire officer and insurer will ask for, and can agree periodic inspection.
What about fire-rated penetrations into the battery room?
Cable and pipe routes into a battery room cross the same fire compartment boundary. Pyralta supplies and installs Firebreak Service Transits for those penetrations, so containment and compartmentation come from one accountable party.
